Engineering support for redevelopment, production optimisation and the responsible extension of existing oilfield assets.

NOVA / FIELD DEVELOPMENT & ENGINEERING
BUILD ON THE ASSET YOU ALREADY HAVE
A clearer plan for the next stage of field life.
Brownfield development focuses on fields and facilities that have already been developed. The task may involve improving an existing production system, replacing ageing equipment, adapting to changing reservoir conditions or evaluating a wider redevelopment. Existing infrastructure can provide a useful starting point, but its condition, capacity and operating limits need to be understood before deciding what to retain or change.
NOVA’s engineering offering brings field and reservoir management together with well integrity, maintenance, enhanced-oil-recovery and artificial-lift considerations. We connect that scope with the project decision: which opportunities merit further study, what information is missing and which engineering work is needed to define a practical development option.
BROWNFIELD ENGINEERING SCOPE
Connect the field, wells and facilities.
The scope is agreed around the asset, the available evidence and the decision your team needs to make.
01

Field & reservoir management
Start with the production history, reservoir information and current operating picture. Review changing well performance, water production, constraints and the objectives for the asset. The discussion can frame redevelopment opportunities and enhanced-oil-recovery enquiries where relevant. Reservoir response and recovery potential require project-specific evaluation rather than assumptions based on the field’s age alone.
02

Well integrity & maintenance
Connect the production objective with the condition of the wells and their associated equipment. The scope includes well-integrity management and well-maintenance programmes. Available inspection records, well history and known operating restrictions help define the work required. Identify the assets that can remain in service, those requiring further assessment and the interfaces affected by a proposed intervention.
03

Production & artificial lift
Review the well, lift equipment and surface system as a connected installation. Changes in fluid properties, gas, solids or water production can alter the operating requirement. NOVA’s portfolio includes ESP, PCP and rod-lift equipment alongside surface pumping. Artificial-lift maintenance, replacement and upgrade enquiries should identify the existing assembly and the specific duty or constraint behind the proposed change.
04

Facilities & process upgrades
Consider how separation, water handling, pumping and flow-control equipment fit within the existing facility. Define process connections, utilities, controls, available space and maintenance access before selecting a package. Brownfield modifications also need a view of equipment that remains in operation and the boundaries of any tie-in work. The production and process portfolio provides a starting point for the equipment discussion.
FROM OPPORTUNITY TO A DEFINED PROJECT
Engineering at the right level of definition.
01 / Feasibility
Establish the redevelopment objective, review the available data and identify the principal constraints. Compare the study options at an appropriate level of definition, including the uncertainties that could change the project’s direction.
02 / Concept development
Define the candidate development arrangements and their main equipment and facility interfaces. Compare the options against a shared operating basis so the next decision is supported by a consistent scope.
03 / FEED
Front-end engineering design develops the selected concept into a clearer technical basis. Agree the required studies, design information, equipment boundaries and project deliverables before progressing to a more detailed commitment.
04 / Detailed engineering
Develop the agreed design scope and the information needed for the next project stage. Existing-asset interfaces, installation constraints and operating requirements remain central. Responsibilities for implementation and commissioning are defined in the project agreement.
Start with a reliable picture of the asset.
Bring the existing information together
Useful starting information includes well and production history, existing equipment references, process drawings, inspection and maintenance records, fluid information and known operating limits. Explain the business objective and the reason for considering a change. Distinguish measured data from assumptions, and identify gaps that require site verification or further study.
Plan around an operating facility
A redevelopment proposal must account for the plant and wells already in service. Define the interfaces, access restrictions, shutdown expectations and operational responsibilities early. Safety, reliability, integrity and environmental considerations belong within the project review. Any schedule, production target or anticipated benefit needs to be assessed against the actual asset and the agreed engineering scope.
Brownfield development questions
How does brownfield differ from greenfield development?
Brownfield work starts with existing wells, facilities or infrastructure. Greenfield work develops a new asset and its supporting infrastructure. Existing equipment can influence the scope, but it does not establish that a brownfield project will automatically cost less or be completed sooner. Read the brownfield and greenfield development overview for background.
Does every project require a complete redevelopment study?
No. An initial enquiry may concern a specific equipment replacement, a maintenance programme or a broader field-development question. The study and deliverables should reflect the decision required, the maturity of the information and the interfaces involved.
Can an existing installation be reused?
Potential reuse depends on condition, compatibility, capacity and the proposed operating requirement. Identify the equipment that is expected to remain, then establish what assessment or documentation is needed before treating it as part of the future development basis.
